Berlin IV (and Oranienburger)

Hola!

Hi!
Here's the last post about Berlin! It will be a longer post, but will be the easiest way to finish the post series about the travel.

That morning was the last, but I only had slept two hours (I went party that night) so I get up at time for breakfast. Our teachers organised a non obligatory visit to a concentration camp of Sachsenhausen, at Oranienburger, very close to Berlin. I thought it was something I must do, because it's an important thing in Germany's history.

We met our guide at Potsdamer Platz. I just saw the buildings from far, so at time we were waiting our guide, I went to see the buildings.

Under this dome, there is a cinema. Here they celebrate the Berlinale, a cinema festival. That days were about to release a movie of Captain America and there where a lot of fans making a queue. I've never seen a queue of fans waiting for something so it was very strange for me.

In a near street there was a Keith Haring artwork! (If you haven't read previous posts, he is one of my favourite artists!) So we went close.

That buildings remind me a Vic's theater...

I had know that existed that sculpture in Berlin, but I was afraid I couldn't visit it, because I didn't know the exact point at map, so I died when I found it!

That day I was wearing a sweater of the artist!

Back to the meeting point, we walked along the german Walk of Fame. I knew some stars , but very few. There where cameras, that you looked through it andyou could see at every star, an hologram of the actor or actress.

Once reunited with the guide, we took the train to Oranienburger. I like how train stations (and Sbahn, Ubahn) are: very clean. The train was two floors, with large windows and tables in front of the seats.

We leave the city of Berlin and we could see the outsides. I liked the fact that they had very colorful buildings, and  residential neighborhoods.

The first floor was for passengers without seats and bikes.

Oranienburger is a town with beautiful houses. I imagine that wealthy people lived there, many were relatives of those responsible of the concentration camp.

This visit was not a good experience for me, I also took many photos. Although many of the facilities were demolished, go through each site and heard the facts that happened there was so sad, it was as if there were still echoes of it, as if souls. I do not say that literally noticing spirits and stuff, but I noticed a very sad and negative environment.

On the wall to the entrance, there were signs telling the chronology of the concentration camp with shocking images.

The Nazis were so ironic, they worked very much in the design of the architecture of this concentration camp to tell that it was "the most beautiful concentration camp in Germany"

As you see, there was nothing. During the years it was used, there had barracks where the prisoners slept. Currently, they are marked on the floor. The "chimney" seen on background is a memorial sculpture.

Así estan marcados los barracones.
As I said, the barracks are marked on the floor.

There was one rebuilt, with bunk beds and other furniture. If already in itself, are tight, imagine that in each bed slept 3 or 4 people ...

Las letrinas.
Latrines.

That field, being the closest to Berlin and one of the first they built, was where the first prisoners stop. From there, they distributed to other camps, though some stayed. It was a male field, and the prisoners gave them tasks to try shoes or ways to kill them. Those who drew well, counterfeited coins.

More ruins of crematoriums. I think this camp had no gas chambers.

This was a building that I didn't understand exactly what it was, but autopsies where practiced at this table.

When we were leaving the camp, we had a mess with some girls who we couldn't find, and finally, my friends and I ended up being the last to leave this village, while the rest of the group went with the train. It was very bad by the rest, specially for the teachers. On the positive side, we took a S-bahn (the train ticket also worth it) and went back by other way, so we saw another part of Berlin. Our guide on the tour took the same S-bahn and sat with us, we talked about the differences between our countries, it was very nice.

A man selling currywurst! I read in guides that they where that mans everywhere, but until the last day, I didn't saw any!

Once in the city, we only had a couple hours, so the first we done was have a kebab for lunch and do the last shopping.

"The revenge of the Pope." When the Communists finished building this tower, they realized that the reflection of the sun formed a cross. I had read about it and I didn't understand it, but the last day I realized what they mean!

Ladies and gentlemen...

I went at Cindy Sherman's exhibit!

At this post (from the third day I stayed in Berlin) I told you that I found the art gallery where the exhibition was hosted, but at that time was closed. So after the shopping, I had an hour until the meeting time, so it wasn't posible to go very far from the hotel and I decided to run to visit it by myself, because it wasn't far.  It was spectacular! The gallery was so huge, and the exhibition very good, with big pictures and the best ones. I had to pay for entry (about 4€, with student's discount) but it was worth.

In the same gallery, upstairs, there was another exhibition (I don't know if it was permanent, I didn't saw any poster referring to this) with very bizarre ancient objects.

I went for last time at Tacheles, to see if there was someone selling. I ended up talking to a salesman, who is was son of immigrants from the Spain due the Civil War and we talked about the independence of Catalonia, the meaning of having a nationality and what is like being an artist in Berlin. The trip was worth just for this! I ended up buying him a pin of gender equality for my sister and a little postcard with a painting by Keith Haring.

And we took the suitcase from the closet of the hotel and we took the S-bahn to the airport. The hotel's walls were decorated with Noir's murals, a well-known artist who also has a mural on the Berlin Wall.

To get the airport, we took a different route, so we saw another places of the surroundings of  Berlin.

Just down from where I sat, It was this empty bottle of smoothie and feel free to get me some pictures with it. Actually, I was dying to know how tastes this smoothie, knowing the ingredients, it seems delicious!

Foto ilustrativa.

The journey was very nostalgic, the sun was setting down and I got a little sad. It usually happens to me when I am returning of a trip, sometimes I feel I need to cry. This picture shows that feeling.

Things that are on sale at a airport's bathroom.

As we arrived early at the airport we had time to get bored (not like the first day, that we almost loose our flight)  I bought a fashion magazine in german, a souvenir that I wanted from this trip.

There was this airport advertising, with babies characterized as popular characters. There was also a Merkel girl.

The return trip was more tiring. Among the excitement of leaving the city, how hard it was to sleep (it's super-uncomfortable sleep on a plane!) And I suffered dehydration ... I arrived at Barcelona's airport like a zombie. Although the most beautiful, was undoubtedly, fly over European cities at night, it was very pretty, oh wish I could knew which cities were!

This trip was wonderful, I will always remember. It was the first time I've gone so far, also the first time I went to a country so different from Spain, the second the second time I  flyed with a plane (and the first one on a long trip) It was a great experience being responsible of money, transport and guide by the city, be on time to sites (the Germans were there very strict with the schedules)
I like from the city (I not sure if this facts could be applied to the whole country) that everything is built to last, and everybody makes the things work properly for everybody (as schedules, train, cleaning ...), the city have highly respected artists and everything is full of murals, people used to be very friendly and willing to help (except a lady who I bumped into in front of the Reichstag, which took me 2 meters ahead and she didn't apology ...), there were many people on the street with aesthetic and different nationalities, but nobody looked bad. Even in neighborhoods with more immigracion, we had any problem.
This travel has given me many memories of the people I met there and also my classmates and classmates from other courses that I had the opportunity to met, I had a really good time with them, they were great travel companions!
